An alternative to the 7-Zip file archiver application with support for many archive types including 7Z, RAR and ZIP.
J7Z is an alternative to popular file archiver programs such as Winzip, Winrar, WinACE, etc. In fact, it was created as an alternative to the front-end of 7-Zip, a freeware program.
The program supports most of what 7-Zip does and can compress and decompress a multitude of different archive files like ZIP, 7Z, RAR, BZip2, ACE, Zip, Tar and others include ISO and CHM. For compression, you can choose between different compression methods such ultra compression or simply no compression.
The program includes many different features that are also available in commercial and freeware alternatives like creating self-executing archivers, header encryption and the creation of password-protected archives.
Overall, J7Z performs alright but is still a work-in-progress that really doesn't compare that well to its big brother 7-Zip. Still, J7Z is an acceptable but bare-bones alternative that can be used in some circumstances.
Features of J7Z
- Backup a folder to a storage location.
- Create or extract a protected archive.
- Increase efficiency by using archiving profiles.
- Update an existing archive quickly.
Compatibility and License
J7Z has been released under the open source GPL license on Windows from file archivers. The license provides the options to freely download, install, run and share this program without any restrictions. The source code for J7Z should be freely available and modifications are certainly permitted as well as the option to inspect the software.
What version of Windows can J7Z run on?
J7Z can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the OS shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8 and Windows 7 having been tested. It runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems with no dedicated 64-bit download provided.
